Main Purpose of Job This position is a professional administrative archivist with the Study of the Legacy of Slavery Program at the Maryland State Archives engaging with and coordinating the Maryland Reparations Commission as established by Chapter 9, Laws of Maryland, 2025 Special Session. The Commission is mandated to research the educational, financial, historical, and sociological harm done as a of race-based slavery and the inequitable policies perpetuated upon people of African descent in Maryland.
The Commission will author two reports stemming from this research on reparative justice which “make recommendations relating to appropriate benefits to be offered to individuals impacted by historical inequality” to the Governor and the General Assembly. This position will provide administrative and organizational support to the Commission under the supervision of the Study of the Legacy of Slavery Program staff at the Maryland State Archives in coordination with the Commission Chair and Vice Chair. Special topic areas of the role include Social Justice Studies and Policy, African American History, Maryland History, Civil Rights, Reparations and Slavery.
POSITION DUTIES
• Serving as the administrative point of contact for Commissioners and the general public regarding the Commission.
• Scheduling Commission meetings, communicating schedules and keeping calendars updated.
• Preparing meeting agendas and presentations on behalf of the Commissioners.
• Documenting policies and procedures developed by the Commission.
• Managing correspondence of the Commission by mail, telephone and email.
• Setting up in-person, hybrid and virtual meeting spaces, and recording meetings as needed.
• Issuing invitations, follow ups and thank you correspondence for the Commission.
• Attending Commission and Committee meetings and drafting official minutes.
• Organizing and managing Commission files, providing records management oversight and preparing permanent files for archiving.
• Communicating approved Commission updates to the public and stakeholders through press releases, emails, telephone calls, websites and social media.
• Compiling and submitting preliminary and final mandated reports.
• Supporting outreach initiatives of the Commission.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Six years of experience in professional archival work with public records.
Notes
• Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional archival experience for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute academic credit from an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute two years of experience in the Archival Assistant series classification for required education and up to four years of the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Selective Qualifications
Successful completion of 1 year of coordination/management of a Commission, Board, or Committee for a government, public or private entity.
Desired Or Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of 6 months experience coordinating public meetings or hearings.
Direct experience with reparations subject matter, such as a class, a meeting/workshop attendance, or volunteerism
Successful completion of 6 months experience acting as a liaison with public and/or press
